Complete kits are available for a wide range of popular models from Hero, Bajaj, TVS, Honda, and Yamaha.

What Is a Piston Kit and What Does It Include?

A piston kit is a total replacement of the piston system of two wheeler engine. Replacement of individual components A piston kit contains all the components needed for a complete piston replacement in one model-matched kit. It is therefore the preferred choice for engine rebuilds, workshop repairs and aftermarket supply.

A standard two-wheeler piston kit includes:

  • Piston - the aluminium alloy component that moves up and down inside the cylinder bore, converting combustion pressure into mechanical motion
  • Piston Rings (Ring Set) - typically two compression rings and one oil control ring, sealing combustion gases above the piston and scraping excess oil from the cylinder walls
  • Piston Pin (Gudgeon Pin / Wrist Pin) - the hardened steel pin that connects the piston to the connecting rod's small end
  • Circlips (2 pieces) - small spring-steel clips that retain the piston pin in its bore, preventing it from sliding out during engine operation

Sourcing all four components together as a matched, model-specific kit eliminates the risk of dimensional mismatch between parts, ensuring correct clearances, accurate ring groove fitment, and proper pin diameter for that specific engine design.

Product Overview

RADO piston kits are manufactured from aluminium alloy, the universal material choice for two-wheeler pistons due to its ideal combination of low density (keeping reciprocating mass low for high RPM performance), high thermal conductivity (efficiently transferring combustion heat away from the crown), and sufficient strength and hardness after heat treatment to withstand the mechanical loads of engine operation.

Each piston is precision-machined to OEM-matching bore diameter, ring groove dimensions, pin bore diameter, and overall height, ensuring correct fit in the cylinder, proper ring seating, and accurate piston-to-valve clearance for each specific engine model.

What Does the Piston Do in a Two-Wheeler Engine?

The piston is one of the most mechanically demanding components in any internal combustion engine. It performs four distinct functions simultaneously:

Seals the combustion chamber

Together with the piston rings and cylinder head, the piston forms the upper boundary of the combustion chamber, maintaining compression pressure during the compression and power strokes

Transmits combustion force

When the air-fuel mixture ignites, the resulting pressure acts on the piston crown, pushing it down and transmitting force through the piston pin to the connecting rod and crankshaft — generating the rotational power that drives the motorcycle

Pumps oil

The oil control ring on the piston continuously scrapes excess oil from the cylinder walls and returns it to the sump, preventing oil burning and maintaining correct lubrication throughout the cylinder

Transfers heat

The piston absorbs heat from combustion and conducts it to the cylinder walls and piston rings, which then transfer it to the engine's cooling system (oil or air)

Because the piston operates at high speed, high temperature, and under continuous mechanical load, material quality, dimensional precision, and ring seal integrity directly determine engine power output, fuel efficiency, oil consumption, and service life.

When to Replace a Two-Wheeler Piston Kit

A piston kit typically needs replacement when:

Excessive Oil Consumption

Engine burns oil (blue smoke from exhaust) indicating worn piston rings or cylinder bore

Loss of Compression

Hard starting, poor power and rough idling caused by a low compression reading on a compression test

Engine Knock or Piston Slap

Audible knocking sound from the engine, particularly at cold start, indicating excessive piston-to-bore clearance

Scoring or Seizure Marks

Visible damage on the piston skirt or cylinder bore caused by overheating or lubrication failure

Worn Ring Grooves

Ring groove width exceeding the wear limit, preventing proper ring seal

High Mileage Engine Rebuild

Scheduled replacement as part of a full top-end overhaul at high mileage

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

RADO piston kits are manufactured from high-quality aluminium alloy, the industry-standard material for two-wheeler pistons, chosen for its low density (keeping reciprocating mass minimal), high thermal conductivity (efficient heat dissipation from the crown), and sufficient strength after heat treatment to withstand the mechanical and thermal loads of engine operation.

Each RADO piston kit includes the piston, piston ring set (2 compression rings + 1 oil control ring), gudgeon pin (wrist pin / piston pin), and 2 circlips, everything needed for a complete piston replacement in the specified engine model.

Yes. RADO piston kits are available in standard bore dimensions and oversize configurations (+0.25mm, +0.50mm, +0.75mm, +1.00mm over standard) to accommodate rebored engine cylinders. Confirm the rebored cylinder diameter before ordering.

Replace the piston kit when the engine shows excessive oil consumption (blue smoke), loss of compression, engine knock or piston slap, visible scoring on the piston or cylinder bore, or worn ring grooves, or as part of a scheduled top-end overhaul at high mileage.

The top compression ring provides the primary gas seal preventing blow-by. The second ring acts as a secondary gas seal and assists oil scraping. The oil control ring (bottom ring) regulates the oil film on the cylinder wall, preventing excess oil from entering the combustion chamber.
